Past Absurdities22 Apr 2016, Posted by Blog in
New beginnings always get me pondering past absurdities.
So, my husband (Ted) and I (Lydia) plan our summer with SI in Africa, there is one crazy story that keeps coming to my mind:
It was my very first time in Africa and suddenly the local missionary is putting me in a Jeep with some African pastors saying: “See you in 3 days.”
My inner-dialogue: “Ummm… what now?!!!!?” “Who are these guys?” “Why are you sending me away with them?” “I was always told to not get into a car with strangers.” “Maybe that rule doesn’t apply in Africa… I don’t know, it’s my first time here.”
Needless to say, I survived this journey since I’m writing to you right now. But looking back at such an absurd moment, fear quickly subsided as this three day journey became one of the most life-changing times of my life.
My new travel companions laughed with such bravado and bass that the Jeep shook. They asked every question you could imagine, including why I wasn’t married… which turns out to be a common question you ask a single 24 year-old. And they literally talked for hours and hours about how great the Lord is.
I could never have imagined such a crazy trip. But God said He would give us more than we could ask or imagine… and I can now say from experience that the unimagined absurdities make us who we are.
My love for Africa, my soften heart for these people began on this journey. It’s the reason I’m thankful to spend the summer serving there. I can’t wait for the inevitable surprises that await.
Loving the journey,
